The first to cultivate and use cacao beans were the Maya, who called the drink made from ground cacao beans “xocoatl,” meaning “bitter water,” as it was mixed with water, spices such as chilli, and vanilla. Later, among the Aztecs, cacao held such value that the beans were even used as currency—100 beans could buy a turkey. Emperor Moctezuma II reportedly drank many cups of xocoatl daily, believing it gave him strength and wisdom.
Despite the evolution of chocolate, raw cacao beans have regained popularity as the purest, most natural form of cacao.
